Boos and Booklovers, Get Ready for the Beginning of Blackoween!

There is no end to Spooky Season in my house, but I know only some people are on that type of time, so I have been waiting until the beginning of October to start writing about the new horror and crime series on my radar. However, in honor of the cozy vibes that fall brings, I have been less interested in the latest films and television series during this time and more drawn to the books that fit the fall theme. And nothing says fall like murder, mystery, and anything magical.

With these themes in mind, I began perusing my BookTok recommendations and came across a reading challenge I had never heard of called Blackoweenathon. From what I have learned from the Creator Bre (@DBooktician on most social media platforms), this is the fourth year of Blackoween, an annual and month-long celebration of Black authors and readers invested in crime fiction, horror, and mystery novels.

As a virtual readathon, Blackoween includes events that participants can attend to accompany their journey through a self-selected booklist that responds to specific prompts and descriptions. Some of these are book-club-style events hosted by content creators via social media platforms like TikTok and Twitch, including numerous “black girls that read.” The group reads are also curated with specific books that fit the overarching themes…
