As I have discussed for the past few weeks, I have been listening to music from my youth and reflecting on the themes. And, while I enjoyed my trip down memory lane, it has started to get old quickly. Specifically, when listening to J. Cole’s music, I noticed how often he refers to women as hoes in his lyrics.

Now, my issue has nothing to do with using the terms bitches and hoes; I’m not interested in those hip-hop wars. The problem is that almost every time J. Cole uses the term ho, he says it with his chest and with all disrespect. And it got to the point that every time he said it, I started to give him and the music side-eye because not too much on the pot calling the kettle a ho. Especially when it’s evident that he spent his youth rapping about all manner of ho-adjacent activities, yet it is apparent that he has a strong disdain (or at the very least some sardonic disses) for any woman that he views as ignorant or immoral.
