The Greatest Joke Ever Told: Musings on Celebrity Media, Monoculture, and Millennial Memory
Mondays have become my favorite day of the week because it’s when Apple Fitness Plus releases new workout content. Fitness Plus is an app that offers video workouts for different exercise plans and equipment for those unfamiliar with it. The unique aspect of these videos is their integration with various Apple products, such as Apple Music, TV, and the Apple Watch. Therefore, on Mondays, I select my exercise routines for the week based on the video content and the new playlist that comes with it.
This week, I was excited to do a HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workout with British kickboxing trainer Jamie Ray because the music was hip hop and R&B from the early 2000s. The playlist included artists like J. Rule and Amerie, and at one point, Jennifer Lopez’s “Jenny From the Block” played between squat jumps and weighted twists. As the song began to play, Jamie Ray and the other trainers noted that they loved it before bursting into laughter. If you’re less chronically online than I am, you might not get the joke, but Jennifer Lopez faced criticism this week for her latest Amazon documentary, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told.”
