Narrating Pains and Gains on the Path to the Paris Olympics
Currently, I’m keeping up with the 2024 Paris Olympics, just like many others worldwide. Although I’d usually be out and about instead of watching TV, due to a fatal (or fated) combination of overtraining and buying the wrong pair of running shoes, I find myself bedridden and bored, waiting for the inflammation in my ankle to subside. Despite my desire to lament this rest period, I’ve found inspiration and motivation in watching the stories of the many Olympic athletes and hopefuls who have shared their trials and tribulations on their journey to Paris.
While watching the Women’s Gymnastics events, I found comfort and camaraderie while wrapping my foot and ankle, even hobbling around the house, as I watched Simone Biles perform despite a calf injury. Many other women were seen spraying their feet, wrapping their legs, and holding onto hope to compete for another day. More than the images of strength and resilience captured on camera, we also hear narratives of overcoming shared by the commentators each time an athlete takes the floor.
