People cope with grief and disappointment in different ways, and after the news of the 2024 election, I found myself experiencing many familiar feelings of sadness and cynicism. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised when I received an email from one of my favorite literary arts organizations inviting me to participate in a collective organizing event for poets and writers on November 6th. This event offered a space to share our hopes and fears while engaging in exercises designed to help us emotionally ground ourselves and create movement forward.

We reflected on the writer’s role throughout history and social change during the event. Rather than succumbing to sadness, I began to think about how we can all contribute to imagining and creating a better future through our creative practices and collective efforts. Although there are many topics I want to address in the wake of this election, I realized that as I sat down to write, I had already covered several themes and concerns that have been circulating online.
