I have always struggled with writing poetry. As a long-winded and lyrical wordsmith, my poems eventually become winding works that make better songs or chants. But now and then, a line meant to be a poem comes to me. After sitting through the opening plenary to a conference this past Fall, I spoke one of these lines.

“I don’t want to be a lighthouse for dark men,” I said aloud to my table in the emptying conference hall. My two conference mates that morning each turned and exclaimed, “You have to write that down,” and so I did. I wasn’t sure what had brought on that line (I wasn’t at a creative writing conference after all). But the line has stuck with me, and I’ve spent a little over a year turning that one line repeatedly in my head. However, it wasn’t until I read the book of poetry titled “Pretty Boys Are Poisonous” that the line began to make sense.

Released to the public in November 2023, “Pretty Boys Are Poisonous” is a collection of dozens of poems written and read by actress Megan Fox. Known for her roles in iconic franchise series like Transformers and the cult horror film Jennifer’s Body, many people were surprised to learn that Fox had penned a book of poetry. But it’s unsurprising once you read the poems and hear her talk about them.
