Like most of the internet, the premiere of Spotify Wrapped is my favorite part about December. There is something about seeing all of that data visualized so perfectly that makes me giddy, and I was shocked to learn that the song “DOGTOOTH” by Tyler the Creator was my most-played song of the year. But, after seeing that it was closely followed by Alicia Keys’ “Show Me Love,” some music from Chloe Bailey/Chloe X Halle, and a little Victoria Monet, it was apparent that Apple’s Fitness+ Workouts and NPR’s Tiny Desk are the most significant influence on my musical choices.

I was also surprised to find out that some of my favorite artists of the moment, like Kali Uchis, Janelle Monae, and Durand Bernarr, or even the 80s/90s R&B that I constantly listen to, did not make it to my Top 5 list of most frequently listened to music. This made me wonder about the connection between our media habits and what they reveal about us. It is also interesting how the quantitative data of my listening habits contrasts with the more detailed and holistic qualitative experience of knowing what I truly enjoy hearing.
