I love an old-fashioned fated connection. Whether good or bad, something about a chance encounter gets you thinking and growing into a different version of yourself. As a Pattern app devotee, I have been hearing for years about the vertex, the nodes, and all those other points of destiny laid out in the stars.

While many people discuss fated connections with soulmates, the truth is that not all connections are so sanguine. So, to build on my previous essays about destiny, I want to delve deeper into my latest project on desire. Specifically, I aim to explore the concept of karma and its impact on artistic production and the psychological journey of understanding oneself by reflecting on the artist Nan Goldin and her photographic slideshow, “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency.”
