The Dusk Before Dawn: How Banning TikTok Represents the Dawn of the Digital Dark Ages
Today, I had planned to write about Mychal the Librarian and explore the reasons behind the growing popularity of librarians on the TikTok app. However, once again, my social media feed is filled with discussions on the possible ban of TikTok. While banning TikTok may be new to some people, those who have been using the app for a while are familiar with this story because we have seen it all before.
The last time we heard that Congress would ban TikTok in the US, I discussed my love for the app with my therapist. Seeing my passion for the platform and fear of its demise, she asked me a question that stayed with me for months. “What would you do if they banned TikTok?” I must confess that while I tend to be emotional in real life, I never cry in therapy. But I immediately began to tear up at the thought of losing my carefully curated network and For You Page on TikTok. After that therapy session, I spent even more time on the app, absorbing all the content I could before the possible ban.
