The Writers Dilemma: What “The Best Man” Taught Me About Friendship, “Feud,” and Writing Fiction
Today marks the beginning of Valentine’s week, and as promised, I am here to explore some of my favorite films in the Black Romance genre. If you have read my essay on “Black History Valentine Bingo,” you may be aware that this month, I have come up with a challenge to present my top 25 films in the Black Romance genre. I have listed the movies below for your reference.
If you are already familiar with these films, you may have noticed that each row has a specific theme or purpose that connects the movies beyond the romance genre. Based on my Black History Valentine’s Bingo card, I have decided to focus on films in the top row that are relevant to artists, creatives, and writers. While most Black romance films focus on “Buppies” or young black professionals, another trend within the genre focuses on the artsy side of the culture.
Within popular culture, these two ways of being tend to compete. From Hallmark movies to romantic comedies, it is a common trope to juxtapose the uptight corporate professional with the free-flowing artist or business owner who has chosen to follow their dreams…
