What Pornhub Can Teach Us About Pride

Over three weeks into Pride month, I struggled to decide what to write about. And this struggle feels ridiculous because every month, I have no problem writing numerous essays about LGBTQ topics. However, aside from the new releases from Kehlani and Billie Eilish, this month has felt like a dead zone regarding queer culture. While I could gush about all the music videos that excited me this month, there are more important things to discuss, which is why I decided to write about Pornhub in the most seriously unserious way.

Although I understand that Pornhub is a more than problematic platform due to its poor content moderation and treatment of performers, as an internet researcher obsessed with ethics, the platform is fascinating. I am also one of the only people who can truthfully claim that I spend more time analyzing the ads and comments than watching the content. The platform has some of the most unique norms of community engagement on the internet, and if you want to know what’s going on in the world of gender and sexuality, Pornhub is the place to find that data.
