When Observation is the Sincerest Form of Comedy
Sometimes, I think that I missed my calling as a detective, mainly because I love listening to people lie. That’s not to say I surround myself with people who can’t tell the truth to save their lives. I just enjoy noticing the small lies in life — the peculiar pieces of information someone chooses to leave out or the particular details they pretend to remember, mainly because most people lie about the darnedest things.
I have also noticed that detecting lies and falsity is a prevalent pastime among neurodivergent people. The concept of lying has become a communal fascination, a fun fact about the human species, and a test of pattern recognition abilities. During our not-so-secret neurodivergent meetings, we share insights and information about why neurotypical people are so comfortable with lies and alternative facts. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of videos on the subject, and they are all hilarious.
