Where Did All the Black Blogs Go?

I guess you wonder where I’ve been — in my best Bobby Caldwell voice. But all jokes aside, I realized today that it’s been over a month since I last posted on Medium. While this might not mean much to some, it’s notable for me because next month, June, marks the anniversary of my start on Medium four years ago, and I have been very consistent in my writing on the platform.

In fact, last year, I generated a steady stream of secondary income by publishing here a few times a month. But lately, the energy has shifted, and I’ve felt frustrated by all the changes to the platform. But more than that, I’ve had to confront the fact that many reasons I fell in love with Medium have quietly disappeared.

At the top of that list is the slow erasure of publications centered on Black culture.

I don’t think I have ever shared this, but I began posting on Medium because of my love for ZORA magazine. ZORA is a medium publication dedicated to sharing stories from the perspectives and experiences of Black women.
