Zara Does Data Privacy Better than The Tech Giants

The other day I got an email from Zara introducing the Fall/Winter 2021 Scarf Collection. Always here for a 1970’s art teacher aesthetic, I had to check out the collection as soon as possible. Upon clicking the link to the advertisement, I was met by a very interesting pop-up.

This pop-up was a small white box which clearly stated the words “Do Not Sell My Personal Information”. This statement not only gives an example of how websites and platforms should be talking about data privacy online, but it also adequately addresses two of my main issues with social media platforms i.e. consent and communication.

Communication and Informed Consent

My first issue with the privacy policies of most companies is the lack of clear communication when it comes to how the policies are written, as well as the expectation of the user to accept said policy without question. For those who have a research background, you may be aware of the term “informed consent” and how this is different from expressed consent.
